The term Char Dham (four abodes) was first used by a Hindu philosopher and reformer Shri Adi Shankaracharya, where he defined the four famous Vaishnavite pilgrimages.

The ancient pilgrimage sites that were mentioned in the scriptures were Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. Each of these has their own significance and importance in Hindu mythology.

In the recent times, these ancient sites are identified as Chota Char Dham to differentiate them from the bigger circuit which includes Badrinath, Rameswaram, Puri and Dwarka.

The current destinations are spread across four different directions, wherein Badrinath is in the North, Puri in the East, Rameswaram is in South and Dwarka in the West.

A visit to this religious circuit is referred to as Char Dham Yatra. As per the old belief, a Yatra to the Char Dham helps in washing away the sin and attaining Moksha.

These pilgrimage sites are considered to be highly significant and it is customary for the Hindus to visit them once in a lifetime.

Owing to the significance, the Char Dham witnesses abundance of pilgrims from all over the world visiting it to experience the eternal bliss.

According to the Puranic legends related to Hari Hara, Lord Shiva is sure to reside near every place where Lord Vishnu resides, because they are eternal friends.

Char Dham is no exception as the Kedarnath is considered the pair of Badrinath, Rangnath Swami is a pair of Rameshwaram, Somnath is for Dwarka and Jagannath Bhairava for Puri.
